Observe World Oceans Day this Sunday, June 9th!

Since 2008, the United Nations have officially recognized June 8th as World Oceans Day, and for good reason; the ocean generates most of the oxygen we breathe, helps feed us, regulates our climate, cleans the water we drink, is home to many potential medicines and, of course, provides limitless inspiration and beauty enjoyed by all who have ever experienced being by the sea.

While the ocean may be huge, mankind’s impact on it, and the creatures that live in it, is all too real. The sea turtle, for example, has been threatened by humans due to unsafe fishing methods, black market demand for their meat, eggs and shells, beach development and oil pollution. Now Jade Riviera Cancun helps ongoing turtle conservation efforts with our Turtle Release Program. After protecting sea turtle nesting areas while the eggs develop during the summer months, upon hatching, staff and guests come together to release precious baby sea turtles in to their ocean home.

Guests of Now Jade Release Baby Sea Turtles

Releasing baby turtles into their natural environment is a highlight for guests staying at Now Jade Riviera Cancun this time of year.  It is an amazing opportunity for guests of all ages to hold these precious turtles just before they are released. The turtle release program is part of our ongoing turtle conservation efforts.

Mother Caray Green Sea Turtles visit the beaches in the Riviera Maya to lay their eggs and as part of our environmental efforts we protect the nests until they hatch.  We also educate our guests on safety precautions that should be taken during the fragile sea turtle nesting months, May through October.

Check out the photos below of the first guests of the season who released the turtles back into their natural habitat at Now Jade.
